If you have read my article on Cut the CRAP than you know that artificial sweeteners are listed as CRAP that you should cut from your diet, but what’s the big deal?
It has little to no calories!
Artificial Sweeteners are used in many foods today to replace or lower sugar, they are often sold as low or no calorie foods, as diet foods or as a healthy/good alternative. But looking a little deeper you will find they are anything but a good alternative. If your end goal is to live a life life of health and wellness then I highly recommend cutting the fake sweeteners.
Aspartame is known under other aliases such as Equal, NutraSweet, Spoonful, Equal-Measure and acesulfame potassium. Aspartame is made of three chemical compounds aspartic acid (40%), phenylalanine (50%) and methanol aka wood alcohol (10%).
Aspartames approval is one of the most contested in the history of the FDA. There have been over 10,000 complaints filed and over 91 symptoms related to it’s consumption, including but not limited to:
– Weight Gain
– Heart Palpitations
– Anxiety Attacks
– Memory Loss
– Joint Pain
– Loss of Taste
Not to mention the triggering of worse health conditions like:
– Brain Tumors
– Chronic Fatigue Syndrom
– Parkinson’s Disease
– Multiple Sclerosis
Information above is can be found in references below. This also includes more information about aspartame. (1)
Aspartame is not a real food and is a chemical ingredient no matter what anyone tries to argue. The fact is it was not meant to be consumed and to our bodies it is a foreign invader, but it is not the only artificial sweetener out there.
Splenda is just a commercial name for Sucralose and it is sometimes marked as a natural sweetener, but it is anything but natural. It is said that Sucralose comes from sugar just like cheese comes from milk, but what is the real process to get Sucralose from sugar?
Splenda describes its creation process as follows,
SPLENDA® is also the brand name for the ingredient Sucralose. It is made through a patented, multi-step process that starts with sugar and converts into a no calorie, non-carbohydrate sweetener. The process selectively replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms.
In other words Splenda is a chlorinated sugar, which are not foods that our bodies were made to recognize and digest. In 2008 a Duke University study done on Splenda found that Splenda alters the intestine flora as it destroys the beneficial bacteria in the gut, which is killing the way you digest!
Aspartame and Splenda are just two different types of artificial sweeteners, but none of these unnatural no calorie sweeteners are worth having in our diet.
Did you know that no calorie Artificial Sweeteners can cause weight gain?
Yes that is right that 0 calorie Diet Soda or that 100 calorie weight loss snack cake could be adding to your waistline! Here are just a few studies that found this to be true.
“Women who used artificial sweeteners were more likely to gain weight than non- users, regardless of their initial weight.” – Preventive Medicine
“Adults who drank artificially sweetened beverages consistently had higher body mass indexes (BMI).” – The San Antonio Heart Study
“There are positive associations between diet soda and weight gain as seen in boys 9-14 years old.” – The Growing Up Today Study
Let’s Take Action
Here are three things you can do to help you kick the Artificial Sweetener.
1. Stop Eating or Drinking Artificially Sweetened Items: I know this sounds obvious, but sometimes the most obvious things are forgotten!
2. Try Stevia: Stevia is a good natural alternative zero calorie sweetener that has been used in South America for over a thousand years, and was adopted in Japan in the 60’s due to Japan’s ban on Artificial Sweeteners. It comes from a leaf, but it is important to get it from a good source. Some companies highly process this real food into one that is not so real any longer, due to their chemical process. Currently the brand I use is Sweet Leaf.
3. Enjoy A Natural Sweetener: When you are having a special treat it’s okay to use a little Raw Honey, Grade B Maple Syrup or Coconut Nectar. Remember a special treat is something you only have once in a while, so enjoy it there is no need to eat that cardboard diet food!
